The town of South Portland is located just south of downtown Portland along the water’s edge. Connected to Portland by the Casco Bay Bridge. Known for its working waterfront, South Portland is situated on Portland Harbor and overlooks the skyline of Portland and the islands of Casco Bay. The suburban community offers many quiet neighborhoods, great for families or anyone who wants to live close to, but outside of the excitement of Portland. The towns proximity to Portland make it a convenient and peaceful place to live.

You will find many local shops, restaurants and boutiques in the Knightsville and Willard Beach areas. South Portland also offers the option of chain restaurants closer to the Maine Mall. South Portland offers a quieter, slower pace of life, reflected in a quiet date night, or a family-friendly dinner. However, the area is minutes from downtown Portland and all its big city amenities,

South Portland offers a relaxed way of life opposed to the busy lifestyle of those who live in its neighboring town of  Portland. Southern Maine Community College attracts students to South Portland and its many marinas attract those who love the water. The Greenbelt Walkway is an off-road pathway enjoyed by walkers, runners, cyclists, and easy strollers. The trail spans 5.6 miles from Wainwright Athletic complex near the Scarborough town line to historic Bud Light Park, where Liberty Ships were built during WWII.

 

 

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Like the New England area, South Portland has an amazing assortment of locally caught seafood and prides itself on serving these delicacies at many of the local bars and restaurants. The Saltwater Grille is a locally owned, fine dining establishment with amazing views of the marina and ocean. North 43 Bistro at Spring Point Marina, serves up a sophisticated and upscale take on classic American fare. Scratch Bakery has freshly made bread and pastries baked bright and early every day. You can grab something on the go or dine-in for breakfast. 


A fun night out with friends and family can be had at
Sea Dog Brewing and Bowling. They have a large assortment of local beers and a little bit of competitive bowling fun.

South Portland area residents support their locally owned businesses, and the Willard Beach area has everything from daily necessities to homewares. The largest mall in the South Portland area is the Maine Mall, where you will find popular brands such as Apple and Macy’s.
 

Things to Do

The Tri for a Cure is a triathlon that raises money for cancer research. It is a popular summer event in the community. When residents are looking for a quiet experience where they can spread out, have a picnic, and relax with friends and family, they head to Bug Light Park or Willard Beach. Bug Light Park has a historic lighthouse and plenty of green space. Willard Beach has family-safe swimming and a white sand beach. No attraction in the Portland area would be complete without art and the Art in the Park at Millcreek is one of the highlights on the calendar.
