Local Lifestyle

Portland embraces the slightly isolated nature of the town within New England. There is an ideal mix of being able to socialize while having privacy at home. Residents flock to downtown Portland when they are looking for a night out or a great family weekend. You will often see people relaxing in the park’s green spaces reading a book, taking the dog out, or playing on the beach and in the water during the summer. You will often see college students in the coffee shops studying for exams or playing music in one of the many restaurants and squares in the city. Portland loves to embrace its local culture and history as well, celebrating the maritime influences of the area, especially in its food, architecture, and art.

Things to Do

Portland is a hub for the arts in New England. So, they have the best live music, concerts, and art shows. The summer is by far the best time to be out in the community, and it is when most of the local events occur. However, Thompson's Point in downtown Portland has year-round activities for all ages. Ice skating is a popular activity in Maine, and the ice rink at Thompson's Point draws a crowd. Seasonal markets in the summertime and Christmas include outdoor concerts and vendors from the surrounding area.

The Old Port district is a great place for a day outing. It highlights the maritime and fishing history of the rocky Maine coast and has boutiques and restaurants. The Eastern Promenade is a wonderful walkway attached to several green spaces — and a beach! It is a great place for relaxing or meeting up with friends during the summer. The Casco Bay Parade of Lights displays beautiful Christmas decorations and lights up the boats in the harbor.
